Every religion has it’s disciples. Some are casual, others are devout, still others are fanatical beyond all sensibility. Football is no different. For Inter Milan, there is the Curva Nord. Their rivals, AC Milan, are the Curva Sud. Each occupies it’s own end of the stadium so, when they play each other, the fanaticos, the ultras, the locos, are separated by an ocean of green lest the violence that is always bubbling below the surface infect the people.
To protect the innocents (or to bind the fanaticos), there are tall glass walls, unbreakable walls designed to maintain a safe division between the fire and the oil. I was blessed to be within ear shot of Curva Nord on the day I watched Inter win the match. I was privy to the ritual chantings and waving of colors which spurred the home team on to sweet victory.
