Ritual Bath

Frozen Memories

Ritual Bath Ritual Bath

The approach to the Galtaji Monkey Temple required a walk through a very small town and up the mountain on well worn steps going past two pools used for ritual bathing. Monkeys were ever present from just before we entered the village and in increasing numbers as we walked upward to and beyond the temple.

In this pool, a group of women were taking their ritual bath on this chilly morning in the cold water. In the ritual bath, the women are topless and visible to anyone that walks by something that really surprised me being that the India I know tends to be a conservative society.

I took this picture during the descent after the group of women were gone. While here, another group showed up so we left not wanting to disrupt the ritual.
