Madurai Gate Detail #1

Frozen Memories

Meenakshi Gate Detail-1 Meenakshi Gate Detail-1

This temple style, common in Madurai, I have yet to see elsewhere in India. True, I haven’t been to many places but, so far, it’s unique to Madurai. We visited a few different Madurai temples and all sported this style. In one, a smaller temple, we were allowed to climb up higher to view the enshrined god icon. Sadly, the icons are fenced off because the unscrupulous deface them with breakage or graffiti. Of all the temples we visited in Madurai, this one was the best as far as upkeep. The colors were vibrant and visibly maintained with loving care (and the Rs. ~60 million donations received each year.)
