The first Buddhist temple I had the privilege to visit was Wat Pho in Bangkok, Thailand. I had long been a fan of the Buddha’s teachings so considered it an honor to visit this famous temple. The only problem I encountered while there was that it was indeed a famous temple which means that, on any given day, it attracts large numbers of visitors. Many visitors also means there exists those they prey on unsuspecting tourists. At the entrance to the shrine of the Reclining Buddha were signs warning us to beware of pickpockets. We were given small bags to carry our shoes into the temple (it’s required to remove shoes when entering the shrine) so the opportunists didn’t abscond with them while we admired the great golden icon. The icon was magnificent.
