Koodal Alagar Temple is a smaller, lesser visited temple in Madurai when compared to the famous Meenakshi Amman Temple. I believe we were the only tourists present at the time with everyone else being believers. Irene and I were definitely glad to be away from the masses to view a little of the traditional temple life.
This structure is at the very top of the temple and houses the Shiva icon. Per tradition, we approached the icon through the passageway on hands and knees, as a baby crawls. This, he said, is a sign of humility. We left the icon in similar fashion but crawling backwards so as to not turn our backs on the god. We adhered to the tradition not because we are devotees of Lord Shiva but because we desired to show respect for this ancient culture.
