My second trip to the Kathmandu Monkey Temple like the first was accompanied by a heavy thunderstorm sending large droplets of water from heaven to earth. I took cover under the temple along with a host of other tourists seeking shelter from the rain. Sitting there in what appeared to be complete serenity was the candle lady, a woman that sold candles to believers. Buddhists believe that the flame on the candles represents the light of Buddha’s teachings. Candles are placed in front of Buddhist shrines as a mark of respect. She sold them in small, medium, and large sizes. I was most struck by the peace that emanated from her countenance.
