As with many religious ceremonies, there was an offering. Typically, offerings are used to propitiate the object of the ceremony. In ancient days the offering was typically to mollify a god or to garner favorable luck. Those threads still run through the ritual. Having grown up Catholic, I am used to ceremonial bread and wine. So, when I noticed this offering included cookies and such, I was caught off guard. My Western biases initially had a hard time viewing biscuits as worthy of a deity. One of the reasons I travel is to help free my mind of its near blind understanding of cultures outside my own.
