One of the inactive wells was guarded by this brass cobra. The brass stopped at the base. The remainder of the reptile was carved from rock and encircled the entire well, it’s body a small lip running along the entire edge of the well. To me, it symbolized protection of the water source, a warning to not waste the vital liquid. The discoloration of the metal over the centuries added to the beauty of the creature which stood about 3 feet high.
