At various places in the Garden of the Kopan Monastery, I found these little scenes depicting points of the Buddha’s earthly life. They were placed in the greenery so I had to actively search them out. This scene, I believe, depicts the earthly death of the Buddha. The Buddha’s final words were purported to be, “Behold now, O monks, I exhort you: impermanent are all compounded things. Work out your deliverance with mindfulness.” The Buddha died of old age, when he was eighty years old. The death was triggered by his body reaction to a dish of wild mushroom.
