The main road in Smoky National Park is chock full of people…so many that it feels as if one has deposited a bustling city in the center of the wilderness. The masses choked out the solitude we had hoped to find in this diverse ecosystem. We were seeking a place to breathe but were feeling constricted. So, Irene and I headed off on a hike into the backcountry to see Abram Falls. Within 100 yards of the trailhead, we were pretty much free of people, free to drink in the wilderness, free to breathe the oxygenated offerings of the trees. The hike required just a couple of hours to complete and left us feeling rejuvenated.
