There is a little diversion while climbing the 1202 steps to the top of Lion’s Rock in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka. The diversion is along a shear wall up a spiral staircase opening onto a small alcove / walkway. Thankfully, the staircase is fully enclosed so there is virtually no possibility of tumbling a few hundred feet and bounding off sharp boulders. Stepping onto the walkway I come face to face with frescoes, all of women. The sight is magical, mystical, mythical. I feel as though my soul has been transported back centuries and I have come face to face with the old ones and want desperately to understand their thoughts, to feel their feelings, to know their knowledge.
