Frozen Memories

The Dambulla Cave Temple is a Buddhist site which dates back to the 1st century BC. It is believed that Buddha was born as Siddhartha Gautama about 620 years prior to the birth of Christ. This complex was built beneath an overhanging rock outcropping and consists of 5 caves, each filled with Buddha statues. The site provided a beautiful overlook of the valley below so it was protected both from above and below. Each of the caves contained Buddha statues. Intricate Murals following the contour of the rock adorn the ceilings.
