Embracing Emptiness

Emptiness which is conceptually liable to be mistaken for sheer nothingness is in fact the reservoir of infinite possibilities. ~D.T. Suzuki

Humans have a tendency to fear emptiness the way they avoid the unknown the way the shun the foreigner. The emptiness of nothing to do on a summer day. The emptiness building in a conversation between two lovers, between two friends, between you and the person sitting next to you on an eight hour transcontinental flight. The emptiness of not being in a relationship, of being eight thousand miles away from a loved one in a foreign land.

We do silly things to avoid existing in the abyss. Indulge in destructive relationship to fill the emptiness of our hearts. Get lost in a bottle of whiskey when confronted with being alone. Let the mind get sucked away by the vacuum known as TV rather than explore the vastness of our own minds.
