I rebel; therefore we exist. ~Albert Camus
Some of us are born rebels choosing – no, not choosing – driven to be contrarian. it is a path I have walked since I first began crawling. It is a path that will follow me to the grave, if not, put me in the grave. It is a path of agony and ecstasy, sometimes both emotions occurring at the exact same time.
I am happy (mostly) to say my three kids have wide streaks of rebel woven into their spirits. True, this has led to numerous challenging parenting seasons thus the mostly qualifier. And it will most definitely cause them to suffer as they forge their own futures. Suffering creates character resilience which is a positive outcome.
They each walk a path – their own, unique contrarian paths – in which they have found joy and meaning in their lives. There will be rough roads ahead for this is the plight of the rebel, of the contrarian, of anyone who refuses to accept the status quo as the only sensible path. They will have the satisfaction of succeeding along the trail they have blazed. They will make a difference. There is not much more a dad could ask for.
